Cone Hut

Tararua Forest Park, Wairarapa

Cone hut was built in 1945 by the Tararua Tramping Club with materials from the surrounding bush including Totara slab walls, beech framing and fern bunks.

To keep material costs down, and keep some history intact, the TTC reused hand adzed slabs and studs from Top Tauherenui and Cone Saddle huts in its construction.

A combination of age and flood damage had seen a few Tauherenikau Valley huts become derelict by the late 1930s.

Cone hut was built by work parties over six weekends in 1945 with all materials carried in from the road end.

They opened it in 1946 with a bonfire and party party before “giving the places back to the moreporks and possums in the wee hours”
