Goat Creek Hut

Old Ghost Road, West Coast

This characterful 4-bunk hut lies on a river terrace near the confluence of Goat Creek with the Mōkihinui River supplying mountain bikers and trampers with an authentic slice of history on the popular Old Ghost Road track.

Built in 1957 by the Nelson arm of the New Zealand Forest Service it was meant to be an early example of the standard S81 design. However the air drop of materials went astray altering their best laid plans and the hut ended up slightly smaller than intended.

The almost 70 year old hut has character in buckets including handwritten wall records that were retained in its 2022 restoration by the Backcountry Trust.

We first came across this hut around 2019 from the DOC hut map tacked onto the wall of a friend's bathroom on the West Coast. They mentioned that they were part of an early restoration, when the lean-to was still in place, so we decided to make a Mini Hut version for them. Since then we’ve made a few editions of this hut with its charming colour scheme and petite proportions, each a slight improvement on the last.

Our 2026 edition captures the hut pre-2022 restoration with lean-to still attached and its current grey / orange paint job.
