Dominie Biv
Kaweka Forest Park, Hawke’s Bay
Standardized animal observation hut that served as a hide for deer researcher Mavis Davidson in Blowhard Bush in the 60s. Mavis was an allround legend of Aotearoa history, leading the first all woman ascent of Aoraki Mount Cook in 1953.
In 1968 the biv was relocated to the present site where it is the highest hut in Kaweka Forest Park at 1,480m. It served as a meteorological station before retiring as a shelter for trampers and huunters to this day.
