Syme Hut

Taranaki Mounga, Egmont National Park

This alpine hut sits second highest of any hut in the North Island on Fanthams Peak. This small cone, reached from the Dawson Falls approach, was named after “plucky nineteen year old Fanny Fantham who became the first woman to reach it in 1887."

The first Syme Hut was built in 1930 by the Mt Egmont Alpine Club (led by Rod Syme), a huge effort with materials lugged up the steep scoria slopes by volunteers. Unfortunately its location meant it often got completely covered in snow leading to bad damage and neglect.

Named after Rod Syme who opened the second iteration in ‘88 (also his age at the time). This slightly higher site means snow drifts are less of a problem although the hut can often be seen covered in rime ice in winter.

Our Mini Hut edition is inspired by this second iteration and features the asymmetric roof pitch, weather beaten walls and metal piles.
